Wet Chemical Extinguishers
These are fires that involve cooking fats and cooking oils. When used correctly, they are very effective. They work by knocking out the flames and cooling the fuel. Also, they react to create a soap-like solution that seals the surface to prevent re-ignition. You can also use them on class A and B fires.
Water Extinguisher
These extinguishers are common and are used in putting off class A fires. Such types of fires are fueled by materials, such as wood, textiles, and paper. The common types of water extinguishers are water spray, water mist, water additives, and water jet.
Most of these work by spraying pressurized water at the combustible materials. This means they cool the materials and prevent re-ignition. You should note use these extinguishers on the electrical equipment.
Foam Extinguishers
These extinguishers are designed for extinguishing class A and B fires. You can use them to extinguish fires caused by liquid fuels, such as paints, diesel, and petrol. They are considered to be more versatile than water mist and spray ones. They work by sealing or blanketing the surface of the fuel. In this way, they prevent flammable materials from getting oxygen. Thus, they suffocate the fire. However, you should note use these extinguishers on liquid fires that are flowing.
Powder Extinguishers
These are multi-purpose extinguishers that are widely used to put off class A, B, and C fires. Also, you can use them to extinguish electrical equipment fires. Since they do not cool the fire, there is a possibility of re-ignition. They are not recommended for use in confined spaces. That is because they cause breathing issues and visibility problems. Use them only when there is no other option.
Carbon Dioxide Extinguishers
These types of fire extinguishers are simply the best for fires caused by electrical appliances and equipment. The good thing about them is that they do not leave residue behind. Hence, no cleanup is needed after extinguishing the fire. Other than electrical fires, they can also be used to put off class B fires.
Fire Blankets
These do not fire extinguishers, but they help suffocate the fire. You can use them on clothing that has caught fire.
